The Great War from 2077 brought death to the world and the radiation spread over whole North America. And with all the pain, violence, mutation and immorality came one of the best videogames in History:
Fallout.
I guess there is no other video game series in the world, that allows you to write your own ingame story in a way that Fallout does. Maybe The Elder Scrolls... but there are obvious similarities between Fallout 3/ New Vegas and Skyrim, because they all were designed (not developed!) by Bethesda. New Vegas is made by Obsidian, which are popular these days, because of Pillars of Eternity, which I need to play next. But for now: Fallout!
The Dark Tower and its protagonist, Roland Deschain of Gilead, the last gunslinger, brought me to New Vegas again, because I really, really love the Revolver and lever-action-rifles. The weapons together with the NCR-Ranger-armor, while one-hitting a Deathclaw from 200meters through sneak-crit is one of the best feelings you can get through videogaming. This is what fits most with the scenario, I'd say. In Fallout 3 I was more satisfied with wearing the T51-B and The Vengeance and simply destroying everything. But both are excellent games in their ways ;)
The biggest problem with New Vegas are the bugs, that make the game unplayable sometimes and yourself violent against your keyboard.
But the game has its good moments and if you ask me, recovering the old lady from Lake Mead is one of the best moments I ever had in my videogames history.
But: Talking about Fallout and great moments.
The undisputed champion is Goris, Son of Gruthar. And I have to say: Fallout 2 is the best Fallout so far.
Goris is a possible companion in Fallout 2. You see him. You talk to him. But he is wearing a robe, a very large, wide robe. So you don't see is face, his arms, his skin. Just a moving robe.
So, since Fallout takes place in a post apocalyptic north america, there's a big chance that you will be involved in some fights. (Though it is possible to finish the game, without killing anyone, I guess)
When it finally comes to a fight, Goris throws off his robe while spreading his arms in a threatening way and reveals his final form: Goris, Son of Gruthar is a deathclaw.
Fallout 2 is turn-based. So, after the fight started, nothing happens, until you make it happen.
Which allows you to sit in front of you Monitor, thinking just one thing:
"A FUCKING DEATHCLAW?! IS THIS A FUCKING DEATHCLAW IN MY PARTY?! HELL YEAH! LET'S KICK ASSES FROM ARROYO TO NEW RENO AND BACK!"
Or, as described at Fallout Wiki: "Normally, Goris wears his brown robe everywhere he goes. However, when
combat begins, he dramatically tosses them off, revealing his deathclaw
form."
I had absolutely no idea that he could be a deathclaw, even though his robe can't hide his crooked back. And he is a pretty reliable companian, too. He's strong. And funny. I liked him ;)
The best Companions from Fallout 3 and Vegas are Charon and Boone, just to complete the list.
I never played :Tactics or Brotherhood of Steel, but Fallout 1 of course. But I never finished it. Same goes for Fallout 2, because of another great shot by the game: Pariah, the unlucky dog.
Theres a chance to meet Pariah, through a random event. The game then gives you a chance to avoid the dog, following you. The chance is either high, or low, depending on your luck-level. Which means, that you can fail, despite 8/10 luck. Which I did. And then Pariah will follow you, which he did. Forever. Theres no chance to get rid of him. His lifepoints are far beyond anything. He has nearly double as much as a highlev character and everytime you attack, he runs at the end of the screen, the fight ends, he regenerates and then will run back to you. So far, that would be no problem, but.
He occupies one of you companion slots. The Number of you partymembers depends on you Charisma. I had enough Charisma for 2 companions: Marcus and Goris. Pariah follows you. 3/2 happens. Now, you need to infiltrate the Enclave Base. A Mutant and a Deathclaw are rather... conspicious... So you tell them to wait. Pariah follows you. The problem is: The Enclave will attack you if Pariah does. Even though he is just an unlucky dog. So. You can't infiltrate the Enclave Base. The only way to finish you quest is to kill everyone in there. With Marcus and Goris no problem. But my companion slots dropped to 1/2, so theres either Goris or Marcus not both, BECAUSE OF PARIAH THE UNLUCKY DOG; FUCK! This is where I stopped playing, because I was to frustrated. But Fallout 2 is a great game, nonetheless. I will keep these memories forever...
And there are so much more. The first unique weapon I found. The Behemoth's in Fallout 3. Liberty Prime! Nipton. Sergeant Dornan! Oh, I laughed so hard. And I died so hard after he saw me twice without my power armor... Shooting your first Vertibird with a tesla canon. The Alien Blaster! And of course the unique Alien Blaster through a random event! (The Alien Blaster itself is kinda unique...)
The first match Caravan you one, after finally realising how this game works... damn...
Meeting Marcus in Fallout: New Vegas after getting shot by his gatling-gun so often in Fallout 2...
Walking on top of the wracks on the highway, shooting at the ground with your fatman and getting catapulted in the air until you smash against the ceiling of the world. All the creepy Vaults. Ahhh, nearly everything about this game is awesome and I'm looking forward to Fallout 4. There were some rumours in the last days, that it will be announced at E3 2015. I hope so, I'm sure it's developed right now, Fallout 3 alone sold 4,7 Million copies after the first two month, New Vegas 5 million after a few weeks. Until today there should be one or another more sold copy. That's together still less than Skyrim with 20 Million, but more than Oblivion, which took 5 years to sell 3,5 Million. I guess Bethesda know how to build up hypes today and a new Fallout would reach a level similar to Skyrim. So Bethesda! I hope we will hear from you soon! There's more to do in a post nuclear Wasteland of North America, or maybe even in the European Commonwealth... who knows? ;)
But whereever we'll start our new adventure, we will remember:
War. War never changes.
So, that's all from Kalnasir for today. I hope you enjoyed my post about Goris...and Pariah... (who invented the whole concept of an unlucky dog following you?! DAFUQ?!)
